Weekly Obsession: Flutter by Peter Ting

Lifestyle Asia Date: 10 Jan 2012

Inspired by classic Chinese 'hua niao' paintings

There's something about birds that's oh-so-serene (and we're not talking about pigeons or those scary high flying kites in Hong Kong), which is probably why we're so drawn to the Flutter collection of ceramics designed by Peter Ting for Loveramics.

"My starting point for Flutter was a simple one," said Ting, whose love for flowers and hummingbirds drew him towards classic Chinese hua niao (flower bird) paintings as inspiration.

His design process involved cutting things out of paper and placing them on actual plates and cups, and it was at this point where Ting was struck by the silhouette, as opposed to the physical representation of the hummingbird.

The result is a modern, contemporary design based on traditional, historic ideas that'll fit easily into any home thanks to its clean white background and colourful bird images.
